5. Stanley Kubrick – Hard-Selling The 2001: A Space Odyssey Soundtrack

Social Network Fight Club

Just a few years after making his sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, Stanley Kubrick was already harking back to the good old days when his only villain was a sentient computer rather than a ceramic penis-wielding, psychopathic delinquent.

In A Clockwork Orange just before anti-hero Alex DeLarge seduces two girls with the pick-up line “Come with uncle and hear all proper! Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones. You are invited” and takes them home for a time-lapse threesome set to the tune of the William Tell Overture, we see him wandering around a record shop.

As he saunters up to the counter, we can see the soundtrack for none other than 2001: A Space Odyssey prominently displayed on a rack. Other records featured in the scene include Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother, The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour and Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush … in case you were wondering.
