18 Mind-Blowing Facts About Blade Runner
9. Why Harrison Ford’s Voiceover Sounds So Bored
After test screening revealed that audience members didn’t have a clue what was going on in Blade Runner, it was decided a film noir-style voiceover spoken by Deckard should be added to give the audience more context.
Writer Darryl Ponicsan was drafted in to write the voiceover though his version was discarded in favour of narration penned by screenwriter-producer Roland Kibbee. Harrison Ford wasn’t happy with the voiceover, saying “It was f*cking nightmare. I thought that the film had worked without the narration. But now I was stuck recreating that narration.”
Hollywood legend has it that Ford deliberately delivered a lacklustre voiceover in the hope it would be dropped from the final cut. Ford has since clarified otherwise stating the reason his delivery sounds so bored is because “It was simply bad narration”.
