Around the world in the last few months, cinemas have closed, then opened, then closed their doors again, meaning film fans have seen very little of the original anticipated movies of 2020.

Fear not, as 2021 is set to be filled with the newest releases and delayed movies from this closing year, with even more to look forward to in the cinema than ever before. Productions have begun on those that have an early release date of next year and sets have finally opened up again on a smaller scale, as directors get their projects off their feet and near to a finished product for us.

From the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to Sherlock Holmes or the continuation of the Saw franchise, the new year is looking like a great time for movie makers and film nerds alike, with even more new and exciting projects on the horizon.

But which films are cinema fans most looking forward to? What will be worth the long wait?

Here are just 18 of the most highly anticipated movies for the upcoming 12 months that will get you through the break of cinema in 2020 and looking forward to what is to come.

18. Black Widow

No Time To Die Daniel Craig
Marvel Studios

Ever since the first Avengers movie, Marvel fans have waited for Black Widow's solo movie. First appearing in Iron Man 2, the character of Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff, played by Scarlett Johannsson, has fought battles using only her combat, gymnastic and quite frankly bad ass skills like no other to fight off the bad guys, but her past before joining the heroes has mostly remained a mystery.

After her demise in Avengers: Endgame last year, Marvel Studios were quick to reassure fans that they would be seeing the character again in her own prequel film. The date was moved around multiple times due to the current cinema closures of the year but the new date seems to have been settled as May of 2021.

Many trailers and promos have been released in the coming year as expected, with an all star cast including Stranger Things star David Harbour and Florence Pugh. The movie's narrative will explore Natasha's past, looking at how she has been formed in to the super assassin of the franchise thus far.

Fear not superhero movie lovers, there's more to come.
