All of the toys accept what is happening and take the time to simply be together with the fire of the furnace reflecting in their eyes. There has been no moment in the history of animation as terrifying as this one. They close their eyes one by one, accepting death, but it's when Woody closes his that the audience truly begin to panic and begin to pray for a miracle. They might be toys but their pain is horribly real. And it all becomes even more horrifying when you apply the theory that they never actually made it out: that their redemption and their happy ending are no more than the dying embers of their imaginations as they burn.
