18 WTF Moments From 2017's Summer Blockbusters

3. The Timeline Twist - Dunkirk

Though it was known prior to the release of Christopher Nolan's war epic that the film would transpire from perspectives on land, at sea and in the air, few could've predicted quite how Nolan would weave these three strands together.

As it transpires, the land sequence takes place over a week, the sea segment over a day, and the air merely an hour, with each being expertly edited together to converge in the third act, maintaining a continually suspenseful, non-linear narrative that never lets up.

This highly unconventional approach recalls Nolan's own Inception with its cross-cutting between three disparate but undeniably interlinked sequences, which cleverly intersect numerous times throughout the film.

If nothing else, the unexpected, initially confusing nature of Nolan's style ensures Dunkirk is a war film like no other, even if it won't be for everyone.
