Joss Whedon promised that Hawkeye would be getting more to do this time after basically spending most of the original Avengers movie as an also-ran or a zombie. Whedon certainly did that, not just giving him more action beats but also setting aside several scenes of character development for him. One of the big surprises is that, after the craziness of the South Africa outing, the Avengers lie low at a farm hideaway, which in fact turns out to be the home of Hawkeye's presumed wife, Laura (played by Linda Cardellini), who just happens to be pregnant, alongside their young son and daughter. It adds more stakes to his part in the action, almost obviously enough that it seems that he'll probably die, but Whedon thankfully bucks convention by having him survive, even if it sort-of makes sense for him to retire from the group now that he has a second son at the end of the movie.
