2 More Reasons Why Fans And Critics Can’t Agree On Superhero Films

1. It's Not Really Fans Versus Critics

The most misleading thing about this whole "divide" is that it's not really two ideologically opposed factions at two extremes of the spectrum. As I opened my initial article with, critics are, at the end of the day, fans of movies, and conversely comic books fans want good movies. They're two sides of the same coin, with the main difference being whether simply having something on screen is enough.

Ultimately, when it comes to superhero movies, it's not a fan/critic divide we're talking about. It's a divide between two sections of the audience. The problem is, "general audiences" is such a broad term that it's impossible to pin down fully and thus fans and critics become de facto rivals. In reality though, it's a spectrum of the different things we all want from movies. At the moment we're getting a lot of fan-loved films with objective filmmaking issues. In a couple of months it could be different, with regular punters turning against an agreeing fan/critic group.

After all, it's not like the only people who disliked Batman V Superman were critics (I know regular audience members who hated it more than I did - WhatCulture Gaming Editor Scott Tailford called it "one of the worst movies I've ever seen"), nor that fans can't enjoy films that are critically lauded; Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Captain America: Civil War are three perfect examples of a recent film pleasing all corners.

I'm not saying there isn't a strong line between fanboys and critics (that's what this article collection has been all about), but above all it's important to remember that they're just avatars for the wider difference of opinion that switches up with each and every movie. And, at the end of the day, the fact everyone's so passionate about this speaks to one thing all sides can agree on; we all love movies.

What do you think of the divide now? Have your say down in the comments.
