20 2000s Movies Audiences Loved, But Critics Hated

With the likes of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner, the years following the 2000s arguably saw some of the biggest Young Adult stories adapted to the big screen, but make no mistake, they were walking the path laid by Harry Potter and, of course, Twilight.

Stephenie Meyer's novel series was first brought to the screen in 2008, and it went on to become a pop culture sensation. The sequel, in particular, 2009's New Moon, sparked the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob debate, as teenagers everywhere were able to think or speak of little else.

Quite unsurprisingly, however, this was not a fanfare shared by the critics. A big factor in this would be the simple fact that, being aimed largely at teenage girls, professional film reviewers were not going to get it. Nor should they have.

This was a coming-of-age story, admittedly built around sexy vampires and sexy werewolves to the point that it pretty much wrecked the genre for a long time afterwards, but it spoke to its key demographic. They weren't supposed to care about the intricacies of the films or the pitfalls in the plots; they cared deeply about Bella (Kristen Stewart), and that was enough.
