20 'Controversial' Movies Everyone Completely Over-Reacted To

1. Ghostbusters

Team America Sex Scene
Sony

The Film:

A re-boot of Ghostbusters with an all-female cast. The film, despite positive critical reviews, was a commercial disappointment and no sequels followed.

The Controversy:

Many disliked it having female leads and saw it as an insult to the beloved original. The film and those involved were subjected to a huge amount of internet abuse.

Why It Was Wrong:

Many controversies annoy you. Here's one which literally makes you want to leave the planet.

If anyone were to claim that we are currently doing well with gender equality, this backlash is the perfect proof to the contrary. People being up in arms about insults to a massively overrated film is bad enough, but it being about the fact that it stars women (4 hugely funny and talented women) instead of men makes it 10 times worse. The vile and misogynistic backlash against the film was horribly unpleasant in every way, especially the targeting by internet trolls.

This was actually a good bit of female representation. The women in the film feel like people for once instead of sex objects and love interests. Alas, thanks to the backlash studios are unlikely to follow the film's example. It was a good film as well, and boasted plenty of fun comedy.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with women starring in films and it should be happening far more. If people are going to try and destroy a movie's success purely because it features female leads, we may be beyond hope.
