20 Action Films From The 1990s You Must Watch

7. Golden Eye (1995)

Fans of James Bond had to wait six years after License To Kill before the next Bond film would come out, due to a legal dispute with the then leading man Timothy Dalton, which resulted in multiple recasts.

In the film, a crime syndicate steals the controls of a Soviet-era satellite, codenamed “GoldenEye”, armed with an electromagnetic pulse-based weapon, and it is up to Bond to find out what the syndicate wants and to stop them. As is usual in a Bond film, there are plenty of gadgets, gunfights and one-liners to go around, as well as a few new surprises, like a chase sequence with a tank.

But what helps take the film to the next level is its stellar cast. Pierce Brosnan nails it as Bond, but it is also a ton of fun to watch Sean Bean play 006 agent Alec Trevelyan, Famke Janssen as the sadistic lust murder Xenia Onatopp, Zabella Scorupco as the skilled programmer Natalya Simonova and Alan Cumming as the “invincible” Boris Grishenko.

Fans may have had to wait longer than expected for GoldenEye, but their patience was well rewarded as Brosnan’s reign as 007 got off to a fantastic start.
