20 Action Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
9. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
The Bourne trilogy served as both a wake-up call and a direct influence for the entire spy genre, opting for realism and a relatable protagonist in favour of the invincible secret agents and far-fetched gadgets that had become almost synonymous with the genre. Closing out Jason Bourne's arc on a high note, Ultimatum also marked a critical and commercial high point for the franchise.
Wrapping up the three-movie narrative gives the story a real sense of closure as Bourne finally uncovers the mysteries of his past, with Matt Damon delivering a performance full of depth, humanity and copious amounts of bad-assery, backed by a supporting cast (including Joan Allen, Scott Glenn, Albert Finney, David Straithairn and Paddy Considine) that wouldn't look out of place in an awards season prestige picture, never mind an action blockbuster.
Moving along at a breakneck pace in order to power through the numerous plot points that need wrapped up, Ultimatum is an energetic and intelligent espionage thriller that doesn't skimp on the action either. Along with Paul Greengrass' trademark camerawork, the series' signature car chases and the stunning rooftop sequence, Ultimatum saw the Bourne trilogy conclude in highly impressive fashion.
