20 Action Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
6. Crank 2: High Voltage (2009)
High-concept, low-budget and utterly batsh*t crazy, the two Crank movies are adrenaline-fuelled cinema in its purest form. Writer/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor utilise no shortage of visual style and guerrilla filmmaking tactics in order to capture their demented vision, with Jason Statham on top form as the seemingly-indestructible Chev Chelios.
Despite dying at the end of the first movie after falling out of a helicopter, Chelios somehow survives only to have his heart stolen by Chinese Triads but manages to escape, the only problem being that his new artificial organ requires a steady diet of electricity to keep him alive. If that sentence alone doesn't sell you on the movie, then Crank 2 may not be for you.
Sodomising a henchman with a shotgun, flash-forwards to nine seconds later, a villain that is a disembodied head in a tank and a preposterous Godzilla-inspired fight scene that sees Statham sporting an exaggerated mask of his own face is par for the course in the movie's world, one that is equal parts hilarious, disturbing and flat-out awesome.
