20 Action Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Thirty years in the making, George Miller's jaw-dropping return to the post-apocalyptic franchise that launched his career is quite simply one of the best movies of 2015. Not too bad for a long-delayed sequel that had spent over a decade in development hell, then suffered from a troubled location shoot once the cameras had actually started rolling.
Essentially one long chase scene padded out to two hours, Mad Max: Fury Road is the most unique summer blockbuster to come along in a long time. Weird, artistic, insane, feminist, imaginative, brutal, kinetic, stylish and visionary are just some of the adjectives used to describe the movie, most of which aren't words you would normally associate with a $150m studio production.
Although he plays the title character, Tom Hardy spends much of the movie playing second fiddle to Charlize Theron's commanding turn as Imperator Furiosa, with the actress giving a performance that instantly elevates the character into the pantheon of bad-ass action heroines like Ripley, Sarah Connor and The Bride. Loaded with excitement, visual style and some of the most brilliant stunt-work ever seen on the big screen, Mad Max: Fury Road is frequently nothing short of breathtaking, and a Hollywood blockbuster unlike anything ever seen before.
