20 Action Movies From The 21st Century That Didn't Actually Suck
15. Dredd (2012)
Nearly two decades after the ill-judged Sylvester Stallone vehicle, fans of Judge Dredd were finally rewarded with the movie that the character deserved. Unfortunately, despite receiving enthusiastic reviews the comic book reboot failed to even recoup its $45m budget at the global box office, virtually torpedoing any hopes of a sequel in the process.
As well as being a violent and visceral action movie, Dredd also demonstrates a brilliant use of 3D that actually enhances the experience for the viewer, an increasing rarity in the age of shoddy post-conversions. A stripped-down and straightforward narrative, along with some brutal R-rated set-pieces result in a no-nonsense genre flick that has rightfully become a cult favourite amongst genre aficionados.
Karl Urban shows Stallone how it should be done as the title character, imbuing Mega City One's most infamous law enforcement officer with the requisite amount of charisma and gravel-throated bad-assery, with his chiseled jaw alone delivering a performance ten times better than anything in Danny Cannon's 1995 effort.
