20 Actors That Were Almost Cast In The Lord Of The Rings
4. Kevin Conway - Theoden
Veteran stage and screen actor Kevin Conway was originally cast as Theoden back in late 1999, but left the production in order to reprise his Gettysburg role of Buster Kilrain in Gods And Generals, which in turn led to Bernard Hill replacing him as the King of Rohan. The actor admitted at the time that his decision to drop out of the project "may yet prove to be one of the bad mistakes" in his long and varied career, so he was at least honest about it. Still, its understandable why a seasoned thespian and Broadway veteran opted against starring in an effects-heavy fantasy franchise; Conway mentioned that although Theoden "has a couple of good scenes, the rest is all battling with armour and stuff", and the actor didn't see much point in jetting to New Zealand and back (and possibly back again, depending on reshoots) to watch a stunt double perform the majority of the character's big moments.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
