Even when Universal finally got their act together and started putting the film as it is now together with Colin Trevorrow, there was still a lot of room for reshaping. Sam Neill confirmed he wasn't likely to be involved as he'd been told it was a reboot, but John Krasinski (most famously the man who was almost an improbable Captain America for Marvel) was in talks.

He would have played the dinosaur tamer role that eventually went to Chris Pratt. A good trade up, frankly.

Meanwhile, in September 2013, Bryce Dallas Howard joined the cast, and there were reports that Josh Brolin was in talks to play the adult lead. Presumably that would have been the same role Krasinski and Pratt were up for, as Brolin dropped out of talks pretty quickly and Pratt's negotiations began in earnest.

Brolin might have been a good addition, but there's something about Pratt's charisma that suggests he might be the necessary buffer to actually make the tame raptors shtick land properly.
