Having already negotiated his way through one Spielberg monster movie as the charismatic, slightly grumpy expert called in to assess the situation, you can see why Richard Dreyfuss would be considered for Jurassic Park. He'd also previously worked with Spielberg on Close Encounters, so the director clearly knew he could depend on him.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear that the link got any further than consideration, which might have something to do with the experience Dreyfuss had Close Encounters, for which Spielberg pushed him to the extreme, as Laura Dern related to Starlog magazine in August 1993:

“Richard Dreyfuss told me, ‘It may be a miserable experience, it may be a great experience, but you’ve got to do it.’ Steven told me that the day they finished 'Close Encounters’, Richard walked up to him and said, 'This has been the most horrible experience of my life, and thank you so much.’ That’s what this was like. Some of it was not enjoyable, or easy, especially for someone who just loves acting: when there’s nothing there to act with, it’s the opposite of what you thought you got into acting for. But in the end, you’re really happy you did it.”
