20 Alien Easter Eggs You Never Noticed

4. Joseph Conrad References

To anyone who ever studied English Lit, it won't be too surprising that there are a ton of Joseph Conrad references throughout the Alien series. For instance, the ship from the first movie is called the Nostromo, and Conrad wrote a 1904 novel of the same name. Then there's the Narcissus, the ship Ripley escapes in at the end of the movie, which could be said to be referring to Conrad's 1897 novella The N***er of the 'Narcissus': A Tale of the Sea. Finally, the Sulaco, the military vessel in Aliens, is the central mining town in the novel Nostromo. Also, the original screenplay for the movie opened with a quote from Conrad's Heart of Darkness (which served as inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now), "We live, as we dream - alone."
