1. Biggest Surprise - Disney Buys Fox, Now Owns Everything You Love

2017 Movie Awards 2
Disney/Fox

Everybody knew that Disney was going to make a concerted effort to take over the world at some point, but the Mouse House's acquisition of 20th Century Fox still came as a massive shock to many. Let's just ignore the fact that The Simpsons knew.

Not content with making untold billions from their live-action and animation studios or the further billions generated from child companies Lucasfilm, Pixar and Marvel Studios, the Fox deal now runs the real risk of Disney establishing a stranglehold over the entire industry.

As well as increasing their stake in streaming platform Hulu to 60%, owning rival animation outfit Blue Sky Studios and assuming control of Fox Searchlight Pictures (who have a strong track record for their movies landing Best Picture nominations at the Academy Awards), Disney has a huge raft of new properties under their stewardship.

The theatrical editions of Star Wars and the X-Men, Die Hard, Predator, Alien, Avatar, Fantastic Four, Kingsman, Planet of the Apes and so many more franchises will fall under the Disney banner when the contracts are officially signed. A great time to own stock in Disney, but a hugely worrying time for thousands that work in the industry.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
