When it comes to the Avengers, it's hard not to think of Dane Whitman, the Black Knight. He was the 15th Avenger, appearing in the roster as early as 1969, and he's still going strong today. In fact, out of all the Avengers from the 1960s, he's one of only five that haven't already featured in a movie and, from that number, the Black Panther is scheduled to get his own flick soon. As for the other Avengers from the swinging sixties, we'll get to them later in this list. Whitman is such a feature of the Avengers that whenever there's a group picture, artists nearly always include him. Take the above image - he's there in the bottom left corner. He's the guy in armour, holding a shield. You can't see it, but he's probably holding his ebony sword in his other hand - a sometimes cursed blade reminiscent of the one wielded by Michael Moorcock's Elric. Why he won't be in the Avengers movies: Whilst the cursed ebony blade is pretty interesting as a plot device (will it turn Whitman into a bad guy?) and his being the most recent in a long family line of Black Knights gives him a perfectly good reason for wearing ancient armour, it's not all good with his character. His baggage includes a flying horse or three and sometimes wielding a more Star Wars-esque lightsaber, and movie makers might think that side of his character would be difficult for audiences to accept. They'd be wrong, but there's no accounting for taste in Hollywood.
