The Plot: Quick-witted stand-up comedienne Donna Stern (Jenny Slate) is in a funk after being dumped, but has bigger problems once a one night stand with Max (Jake Lacy) causes her to fall pregnant. Despite being hell bent on getting an abortion, she wrestles over whether to tell Max or not. Why It's Awesome: A riotous debut from writer-director Gillian Robespierre, Obvious Child tackles controversial subject matter in a refreshingly bold, honest manner, and is a fantastic star vehicle for lead Slate, who is both extremely likable and absolutely hilarious here. Though it takes a mature approach to the hot-button topic at its forefront, it also manages to make plenty of off-colour jokes while also retaining an unexpected sweetness right to the end.
