The film industry has finally started taking video games seriously in the last few years, but who among us expected to see 2023's hit horror video game The Exit 8 turned into a movie quite so soon?

The game is effectively a walking simulator in which players walk through a Japanese metro station and attempt to spot "anomalies" in the station's layout while trying to locate the exit.

Though widely lauded, the game's mere hour-long play-time didn't exactly suggest it had enough meat on its bones for a film adaptation - let alone one that would actually get rave reviews.

But Exit 8 not only clings true to the style and tone of the game, it also manages to successfully translate the game's tricky conceit to another medium, while imbuing it with more emotional depth and character development than the source material's narrow scope allowed.

At present Exit 8 is one of the best-reviewed video game adaptations of any genre on Rotten Tomatoes, and while you can be forgiven for missing it considering it's still doing the rounds at film festivals, it's an absolute must-see once it hits general release.
