20 Baffling IMDb Top 250 Placements You Won't Believe

11. Forrest Gump

Interstellar Cooper
Paramount Pictures

The Film:

A much-loved sentimental classic about a mentally challenged man living through American history, this won several Oscars including the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Placement: #12

Why It's Wrong:

It's definitely fair to say that Forrest Gump, while a good film, is not the 12th best movie of all time. It's very well-done and a really nice movie, but some of the messages are problematic, it can be overly manipulative and it's a bit too long. It deserves to be on the list without a doubt, but there is pretty much no justification of including it in the top 20 films ever made.

It's hard to see how this managed to reach this level in the first place. It's such a maligned film that's faced a lot of backlash because it was the wrong Best Picture of that year. Usually, the Internet gives the impression that everyone hates Forrest Gump and you wouldn't have thought such a disliked Best Picture winner could rise so far up the ranking.

Perhaps this ranking came from the earlier days of the IMDb and prior to the backlash (When it began isn't entirely clear, but it seems to have really picked up in recent years) but it should have fallen down a bit by now. It's difficult to say much against such a warm film, but it is undeniably the least-deserving film placed in the top 20.
