What can be said of Inside Out that hasn't already been said countless times upon its release last year? After a run of disappointing to average films this marked Pixar's return to form (provided you're willing to overlook The Good Dinosaur, of course). The key appeal of Pixar movies often lies in the care and thought put into the emotional journey of the characters, and with Inside Out the emphasis couldn't be more firmly in this direction. Young Riley's development into adolescence, played out from the perspective of the emotional states in her mind and exploring everything from depression to feelings of rejection, marks a turning point in family-friendly animation unafraid of breaking conventions. The critical praise heaped upon Inside Out was entirely justified and Pixar have certainly got their work cut out if they hope to better this in the future - with nothing but more sequels on the horizon it looks like it'll be a while before we get to see something this original again.
