20 Best Cult Movies Of The 1980s
15. Bad Taste
Some cult movies become so by virtue of their humble beginnings, and few films meet this criteria more so that Peter Jackson's low budget debut Bad Taste. Jackson shot the movie with his friends using his own cash, constructing all the special effects himself and even using his mother's oven to bake the latex masks of the alien invaders.
Low budget horror movies made with this kind of love end up becoming cult movies because of their cheap, homemade special effects, not in spite of them. Fans appreciate the time, effort and passion the filmmakers invest in the project, sacrificing their weekends in order to try to craft a film which entertains by virtue of its inventiveness.
Like many classic low budget horror films which came before it, Bad Taste is an ode to the committed amateur filmmaker with a vision, undeterred by financial restrictions or studio interference. Jackson has since reached a career zenith with the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit trilogies, but it's back at his roots where he really shines.
Fans of Bad Taste have something to look forward to, with 4k restorations of his debut feature along with Braindead and Meet The Feebles heading to home media soon.
