20 Best Film Directors Of The Decade (So Far)
3. Alejandro González Iñárritu
2010s Films: Biutiful, Birdman, The Revenant
Upcoming Projects: The One Percent (TV)
Inarritu wasn't exactly lacking in plaudits in the past - 21 Grams, Babel and Biutiful were all major hits and made his name - but the success he's had in just the past two years makes that look insignificant; Birdman took the hook of an alternative superhero film and twisted it into an exploration of ego and The Revenant only went even bigger, using the presence of a brutalised Leonardo DiCaprio to captivate audiences, critics and, perhaps importantly for the director, Fox execs (if it wasn't for tricksy release schedules classing it as 2015, it would be the eighth highest grossing film of this year).
And both were major Oscar hits, of course - Inarritu himself won Best Director twice, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki did a hat-trick (after winning for Gravity), Leo broke his Academy curse and Birdman even snagged the big prize.
The director's now turning into TV, although whatever he returns to the big screen with, you can sure it'll be epically ambitious.
