20 Best Film Directors Of The Decade (So Far)
1. J.C. Chandor
2010s Films: Margin Call, All Is Lost, A Most Violent Year
Upcoming Projects: The Brits Are Coming
Very few directors have an opening three films quite as impressive or distinct as J.C. Chandor: Margin Call was a to-the-point presentation of the financial crash, All Is Lost a paradoxically gripping single actor film following Robert Redford at sea and A Most Violent Year an anti-Goodfellas that solidified Oscar Isaac's brilliance a whole year before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Even Scorsese or Spielberg weren't that assuredly diverse so fast off the bat.
It's not just that Chandor managed to dip his toe into different styles either - each movie feels like a full and complete exploration of an idea. This immediate mastery of multiple genres immediately marks Chandor out as an immense talent to watch. Expect even greater things from him going forward.
