20 Best Films Of 2017 (So Far)

2. My Life As A Courgette

Just for full disclosure, in the UK, we call them Courgettes, as opposed to Zucchinis, which changes the title of this adorable animation somewhat for the worst from the American standard version.

Like the finest work of Laika, My Life... uses colourful, gorgeous stop-motion animation to present a story that is deceptively adult in nature. The sobering tale of parental death, abuse, and self-realisation is a vital one, and the decision to use this medium arguably makes it all the more important.

Yes, it is sorrowful, but it manages to tell a series of hugely emotional stories without being overly sentimental or cloying: it is profound and devastating in the same way Kubo And The Two Strings is, but crucially, it is also heart-warming and finds joy in the darkest of times. Were it not for a film that also did that, it would be the best film released so far this year...
