Running zombies are often a case of sacrilege for fans of walking dead horror movies, and few films featuring them manage to pull it off. The Zack Snyder remake of Dawn Of The Dead being a case in point - fans of the original were not happy to see the lumbering zombies transformed into sprinting champions.

The same can't be said for Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. Perhaps it's because it wasn't part of the Romero Dead series canon, but it's more likely on account of the fact that Boyle's film is an incredibly tight, tense and effective horror film in its own right. From the opening scene featuring a deserted London (shot with digital cameras early on Sunday mornings to avoid disturbing commuters), 28 Days Later single-handedly reinvigorated the undead genre for the new generation.

An inevitable, inferior, sequel followed, but despite many other pale imitators to the zombie genre since the turn of the millennium, 28 Days Later remains at the top of the rankings for horror fans. Here's hoping Boyle returns to the franchise and finishes it off with 28 Months Later.
