When you get to shoot a horror film in an actual abandoned lunatic asylum, you know the production design is effectively sorted for you already. This was the case for Session 9, a film which is as much about the chilling interiors and exteriors of a crumbling mental institution as it is about the effects this environment has on the characters within.

A group of men led by Gordon Fleming (the excellent Peter Mullan) are tasked with removing asbestos from the aforementioned lunatic asylum, and as tensions between the members of the crew grows a series of disturbing taped interviews are discovered. Session 9 is a film which truly gets under your skin, with Brad Anderson's accomplished direction perfectly accentuating the frayed nerves experienced by the characters.

Like many of the greatest horror movies ever made, Session 9 received a mixed reception from critics upon its release but has since become recognised as a cult film. This is a film which trades gore and jump scares for creeping paranoia and atmosphere, and it delivers both of these by the bucket load.
