20 Best Indie Movies Of 2015

6. The Gift

Bear World Magazine
Joel Edgerton's acting career has seen him play some interesting roles, but far more intriguing is the increasing amount of time he's spending behind the camera. After writing two decent screenplays for the Aussie movies The Rover and Felony, this year he wrote, directed, produced and starred in the psychological thriller The Gift. Vanity project this certainly isn't - Edgerton's performance as Gordon "Gordo" Mosley, a man who bumps into former classmate Simon Callum (Jason Bateman) and his wife Robyn (Rebecca Hall), is far from showy, and the film plays out perfectly as a three-hander, building up the characters and their relationship with a drip feed of tension. It's also notable for the way in which it flips the genre's conventions on its head, with the Callum couple's initial feeling of intimidation Mosley's approaches not entirely what it at first appears to be. As such, The Gift is perhaps this year's most intriguing thriller about sociopathic behaviour.
