Maika Monroe It Follows
RADiUS-TWC
It's been a pretty bad year on the whole for fans of horror movies, which makes the unexpected commercial success and critical acclaim for David Robert Mitchell's It Follows all the more welcome, blending retro horror stylings with a contemporary twist. The frequent favourable comparisons with classic 70s horror movies by the likes of John Carpenter are certainly flattering, but Mitchell transcends these platitudes, delivering a new take on the conventional attitude towards adolescent sex and its proximity to death notable in the genre, treating its characters as far more believable teenagers than most horror movies ever dare to. After a great performance in last year's The Guest, this is a superb follow up from Maika Monroe, clearly destined for great things (although that isn't necessarily going to be Independence Day 2), but the real star of It Follows is Mitchell's stunning camerawork, panning and tracking ominously and providing a masterclass in the art of tension.
