19. Blindspotting
Another searing debut now with Carlos López Estrada's blackly comedic drama Blindspotting, a riveting tale of a parolee (Daveed Diggs) attempting to see out his final days on parole in peace, which is constantly threatened by his volatile pal and co-worker (Rafael Casal).
One of the most timely films of the year - think The Hate U Give but with some actual nuance - Blindspotting serves as an in-the-trenches look at what it means to be a black man in modern America, observed through the prism of police shootings against unarmed people of colour.
Though unquestionably downcast subject matter, an incisive script from co-stars Diggs and Casal is also loaded with humour both whip-smart and goofy, while never forgetting what its goals are.
It's not particularly subtle - especially in its riotous final stretch - but given the material, that's completely understandable. This is a loud scream for justice, and one that manages to be as entertaining as it is socially relevant.
