20 Best Indie Movies Of 2018
17. Mandy
Nicolas Cage had one hell of a 2018, providing voiceover roles for Superman and Spider-Man Noir, and also starring in this demented hybrid of art-house deliberation and shameless grindhouse schlock.
Mandy teams with director Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) for this neon-tinged, acid-tipped revenge flick which harnesses Cage's very best instincts as an actor - that is, bats*** insanity - after putting the audience through a slow yet compelling build-up.
The pacing might be a little tough for some, but as an exercise in pure, undistilled atmosphere, it's extremely effective, aided hugely by a wonderful score from the late Jóhann Jóhannsson.
Stick with it and you'll get to see Cage snort a pile of coke off a shard of broken glass and engage in a chainsaw fight, which is all that needs to be said, really.
