And now for something completely different: this death scene isn't hilarious or brutal, it's just incredibly sad and extremely well done. On prom night, Greg (Thomas Mann) decides to visit Rachel (Olivia Cooke) at hospital, where she's in the late stages of cancer. He decides to show her the film he made for her, but as the two watch it together, Rachel slips into a coma, and despite Greg previously stating to the viewer that she doesn't die at the end, she does. Greg apologises to the audience and says that deep down part of him thought she would survive. There's no big, sentimental goodbye: she just slips away suddenly and that's the end of it. It feels very bittersweet and true to life, and that's the movie all over: a superior "cancer movie" because it doesn't get sappy to try and earn your tears. It wins them with honesty.
