1. Tony Stark - Avengers: Endgame (2019)

After Infinity War broke our hearts, we knew that the snap HAD to be undone and that there would still be a body count when it was somehow managed. This was, after all, the final stand of the original Avengers team and not all of them would be coming out alive.

Still, seeing Tony Stark choose to give his own life - but also to be the ONLY one who could to save the universe from Thanos (according to the logic of Doctor Strange's visions anyway) - was still a remarkable thing to witness. He had built a life away from heroism - something he needed to survive - and gave up that chance at happiness and peace and paid for the lives of his friends and billions of others with his own.

In the end, he got to say he was the one to lie down on the wire, and no MCU fan will get over it for a long time. And of course he got to go down with a final act of defiant bravado with his "I am Iron Man!" quip. That's what good cinema is made of.
