20 Best Movie Performances Of 2016

Naomie Harris is marvelous as protagonist Chrion's drug addict mother Paula, and has a unique part in that she's the only actor to play her character through all three of the movie's time periods.

The progression of her character is undeniably depressing, but Harris does a fantastic job balancing Paula's emotionally abusive nature with the ultimate pity the audience will feel for her, trapped in a cycle of substance abuse that eventually gives way to a sliver of hope.

Though audiences may have become a little numbed to the awards-baiting druggie role over the years, Harris manages to breathe new life into it with a deeply unflattering but unforgettable performance.
