Jeff Bridges gives one of his best performances ever as a Texas Ranger on the verge of retirement who spends his final days on the job chasing down two bank robbers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster).

Far from the cliche it sounds like, Bridges' character is steeped in a clear loneliness and lives for the job, while his banter with partner Alberto (Gil Birmingham) accounts for much of the film's well-placed comic relief.

Bridges is an effortless fit for a part like this, half-hilarious and half-sad, culminating in a stunning confrontation scene that brings out the very best he has to offer.
