Steinfeld is magnificent as 17-year-old Nadine Byrd, a neurotic young woman crippled by social anxiety and awkwardness, in a manner sure to be perversely relatable to a lot of people.

Kelly Fremon Craig's script smartly subverts cliches and isn't afraid to paint Nadine as an oft-unpleasant character, and Steinfeld rises to the challenge of pushing her unlikeability further than most teen movies would dare. The result is an uncommonly honest performance that doesn't hit a single off-note.
