20 Best Movie Performances Of 2018

7. Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade)

Eighth Grade
A24

An entirely different but at least equally brilliant coming-of-age performance came from 15-year-old Elsie Fisher, the star of Bo Burnham's discomfortingly realistic high school dramedy Eighth Grade.

For starters, Fisher is not some Hollywood ideal of the misfit teenager: she's actually age-appropriate, her complexion isn't clear and she's believably awkward to boot.

As such, there's a stunning naturalism to Fisher's work, creating a by-turns devastating and hilarious encapsulation of how difficult adolescence can be.

We've all lived through what Fisher's Kayla has in some form, and regardless of your race or gender, it's practically impossible not to relate to at least some of her experience.

Though Fisher has received Golden Globe and Independent Spirit nominations for her spectacular work, it's looking like the Oscars will embarrass themselves by snubbing her. Boo.
