If there were any lingering doubts about Lady Gaga's ability to be anything more than a stunt actress, she quickly destroyed them within the first 10 minutes of A Star Is Born.

It's not easy to breathe new life into such a familiar role, yet by combining the palpable romantic drama with some self-reflexive nods towards her own career, Gaga impressively makes Ally feel fresh and of-the-moment.

It goes without saying that she slays the musical performances, but when she's nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, it'll be as much for her dramatic chops as her fine set of pipes. Almost, anyway.
