20 Best Movie Performances Of 2021
9. Rachel Zegler - West Side Story
In Steven Spielberg's electrifying West Side Story remake, newcomer Rachel Zegler has the unenviable task of living up to Natalie Wood's iconic portrayal of protagonist Maria from the original 1961 film.
But Zegler more than rises to the occasion, for in addition to being a more ethnically appropriate choice - Wood wore "brownface" for the role - she proves herself to possess illuminating screen presence both as a singer and dramatic performer.
Her singing voice is majestic and her fine acting chops help elevate the shakier aspects of the source material - namely Maria's unconvincing forgiveness of Tony (Ansel Elgort) later in the story - enough that she could end up a surprise Best Actress Oscar nominee if voters are sufficiently passionate about her work.
And even if not, it's a star-making performance that's sure to catapult her to the moon regardless.
