The tagline: ‘The longer you wait, the harder it gets.’
2005 was a big year for Steve Carell, who made his bow as the inimitable Michael Scott in the American version of workplace satire The Office and enjoyed his first lead role in a feature film.
Carell had already caught the eye with memorable supporting turns in Anchorman and Bruce Almighty, but it was Judd Apatow’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin that affirmed his leading man credentials in one of the year’s biggest comedy hits.
Who knows whether Carell’s career would have seen such an upward surge had Universal Pictures pulled the plug on The 40-Year-Old Virgin, as so nearly happened a week into production. After reviewing five days’ worth of dialogue-free footage of Carell riding his bike and reacting to suggestive billboards, unimpressed executives told Carell “you look like a serial killer” and considered shutting down production.
Fortunately they came to their senses in time, and The 40-Year-Old Virgin remains Apatow’s most satisfying film.
