4. Dunkirk

Dunkirk Soldiers

After spending his time going between sci-fi and Batman, Christopher Nolan's next trick was to tackle something very much real: World War 2, and the story of the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk.

It's interesting to see Nolan handling a true story rather than one of his own invention, but he does so while retaining his own distinct style - retaining the importance of time, creating some stunning but harrowing imagery, a sound that'll blow your ears off, and one of his most emotional movies yet.

Comparisons will be made to other great war films, but this is all Nolan's, and quite unlike any we've seen before now. It's a very human tale of survival; of people plunged into a horrifying political disaster and how they stay alive. Everything is in the eyes of the actors, most notably Tom Hardy, as we get a sense of the fear, the desperation, and the will to live.

It deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible, offering up a fully immersive experience about the passage of time, sacrifice, and story; you're plunged into the conflict with the everymen soldiers, hearing the gunshots and bomb blasts which, combined with Hans Zimmer's score, leaves you as disorientated as those involved. It'll make your ears bleed, eyes pop, and heart pound.
