Alex Garland admirably follows-up his directorial debut Ex Machina with another winningly unique and insanely ambitious sci-fi spectacle, which certainly deserved a most illustrious fate than a fast-and-loose Netflix release in most of the world.

That said, Garland's movie is an uncompromising and challenging genre effort whose experimental and enigmatic approach to storytelling won't gel with all audiences.

Those who do vibe with it, however, will find a deeply haunting sci-fi horror at its core with atmosphere so thick you almost feel like you're choking on it. Natalie Portman leads a fantastic cast of women - and Oscar Isaac! - in a moody slow-burn that delivers an entrancing belter of a third act.

Further cementing Garland's status as one of the boldest voices working in sci-fi today, Annihilation is a near-masterful collision of cosmic horror and character drama.
