20 Best Movies Of 2020

12. Lovers Rock

I'm Thinking of Ending Things
BBC

Though it's disqualified from Oscar contention due to being a TV movie, this entry into Steve McQueen's Small Axe film anthology series is one of the most evocative and unforgettable experiences of the year.

In a runtime of just 68 minutes, McQueen's film delivers a deeply-felt depiction of a raucous house party in 1980s West London, serving as an infectiously entertaining tribute to black culture.

But on a broader level Lovers Rock serves a wider purpose releasing in 2020 of all years, reminding us all of the pulse-racing joy of being in a room with 30 other people while the bass pulses and the floor bounces.

Though purposefully light on narrative, as a visceral document of the party experience - especially in its sublime "Silly Games" singalong sequence - few films have ever done it better.
