20 Best Movies Of 2022 (So Far)

6. The Fallout

Everything Everywhere All at Once Michelle Yeoh
HBO Max

The Fallout's subject matter is incredibly raw right now for reasons that will be self-evident, but as dramatisations of the impact of school shootings go, it's tough to remember a better movie.

Jenna Ortega, who tellingly appeared in three films on this list, gives a phenomenal performance as embattled protagonist Vada, who struggles to come to terms with both the intense grief and crushing survivor's guilt she feels following a shooting at her high school.

Without a hint of exploitation or grossness, The Fallout takes the pulse of an anxious modern American youth, traumatised by the very notion of the senseless violence that could interrupt a day's education at any time.

There's little in the way of hope or optimism for America's future in that regard, but Megan Park's directorial debut hits some extremely powerful notes.
