There aren't likely to be many movies more important this year than Navalny, a documentary profiling Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and the events surrounding his August 2020 poisoning.

As thrilling and deftly crafted as any fictional treatment of the subject surely would be, Navalny is both a riveting and infuriating look at the Russian political machine's commitment to crushing its foes, and the resilience of those who dare to oppose it.

Beyond Navalny himself being an extremely compelling and personable subject, the doc certainly doesn't leave audiences wanting for drama.

Camera crews shadow Navalny as he investigates the identities of those who poisoned him, resulting in several captured-on-camera moments that are nothing short of jaw-dropping.

While the fight against Russian authoritarianism continues, Navalny at least offers slivers of hope from those who defy.
