5. All Quiet On The Western Front
Though few were asking for another adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, Edward Berger's devastating new film more than justifies its existence with one of the most haunting slivers of anti-war cinema ever made.
Shot with mesmerising skill by cinematographer James Friend, this is less of a war film than an outright horror movie, given the abundance of gut-wrenching sights and unnerving suspense sequences sewn throughout its runtime.
In addition to its incredible visuals and terrific acting by a strong ensemble - especially lead Felix Kammerer - it's also uncommonly nuanced from a screenplay standpoint, digging deep into the muck of warfare and the debilitating effect it has on, well, everyone.
Suffused with a righteous underlayer of anger at the feckless bureaucrats who make war possible, this is seriously powerful and persuasive filmmaking at the very highest level.
