20 Best Netflix 2017 Original Movies - Ranked

1. Strong Island

Strong Island

One of the year's most discomfortingly intimate documentaries and a thoroughly deserving shortlist-ee for the Best Documentary Oscar, Strong Island sees first-time director Yance Ford telling the heartbreaking story of her brother's murder and the justice system's failure to prosecute his murderer, a white man.

Ford's face fills the frame for much of the doc's screentime, a confronting choice that's bracingly effective in cementing her pain and point-blank asking the viewer to consider the facts of the case.

Superbly directed, especially by a first-timer, Strong Island is a thoroughly engrossing summation of a tragic, pointless loss of life taken to the next level by the filmmaker's personal involvement. It doesn't pretend to be "objective" for a moment, but in the current political climate, a film this angry couldn't feel more of-the-moment.
